Recorded music is more than entertainment. It is a primary historical record that captures how Minnesotans have expressed themselves across decades and communities. These recordings form the bedrock of Minnesota’s music history, providing the evidence, context, and perspective needed to understand artists, scenes, movements, and cultural moments. They preserve not only the music itself, but also a record of the people, places, and time periods that shaped it.

Yet many independent and locally released recordings remain vulnerable to loss as physical formats deteriorate and digital platforms evolve. The MMA works to ensure that these recordings remain accessible to future generations through professional standards of documentation, cataloging, and preservation.

A growing network of volunteers, artists, archivists, and cultural partners fuels the archive. To ensure cultural and geographic diversity, we work with historians, educators, and community organizations statewide. Through collaboration, innovation, and community engagement, the archive helps safeguard Minnesota’s music heritage while creating new opportunities for discovery, research, education, and inspiration.
